Obituary for Estel Voss

Estel Voss
Estel Maxine Mamie Voss, beloved mother, grandmother and “GiGi,” 92, of Coldwater, soared into the musical heavens on November 20, 2016 at the Community Health Center of Branch County.
The funeral will be Monday, November 28, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor David Anderson officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 3-5:00 PM, with the rosary to begin at 5:00 PM, at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. The family will receive friends, prior to the service on Monday, beginning at 10:00 AM.
Estel was born October 13, 1924 in Cassopolis, Michigan to James W. (Jay) and Goldie (Lawrence) Rathbun. She married Richard J. Voss on November 9, 1946 in Coldwater. They were married 45 years until he preceded her in death in 1992.
Music and family were central to Mom’s life and that legacy will endure. Her greatest joy was in encouraging the musical talents of all the generations of her family, taking special pride in those who showed talent on the piano. Mom was a fixture in the music scene in Southern Michigan for many years. She was organist for St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church for more than 50 years, played organ in a dance combo, the Manhattan Trio, and played for numerous weddings and funerals. In 2014, she was inducted into the Coldwater High School Music Hall of Fame. Mom was an early female entrepreneur. She was a Hammond organ franchised dealer for many years with our Dad. In later years, she owned Voss Music and Arts in the Old City Hall, now owned and operated as Voss Art, LTD by her daughter-in-law, Peggy Voss. She also worked many years for General Telephone.
Mom had deep roots in the Tri-State area and enthusiastically studied genealogy, claiming lineage to the Mayflower, as well as with many families in Branch County. She was a member of the Branch County Genealogy Society and the Branch County Art Guild. She was deeply patriotic and enjoyed attending many PT Boaters annual conventions with our Dad who served on a PT Boat in World War II.
Estel is survived by four sons, William “Jim” (Peggy) of Coldwater, Tim (Lois) of Coldwater, Dan (Nancy) of Lansing, and Pat (Theresa) of Portage, eight grandchildren, Jon (Jacquie) of South Lyon, Kathryn Bell, Sarah (Michael) Gulinski of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Maggie of Lansing, Kelly Strauss (Andy) of Holt, Whitney of Lansing, Michelle of Kalamazoo, and Jessica of Kalamazoo, and ten great-grandchildren, Kaden Bell, Karsten Bell, Kohen Bell, Kolten Bell, Emilia Gulinska, Auguste Gulinski, Xavier Pendergrass, Milania Amunga, Sophia Strauss and Drew Strauss
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Coldwater High School Music Hall of Fame. www.dutcherfh.com.
