I have so very many memories of my Dad, so many snapshots in my head of him and of our family. We took a fair number of car trips when I was young, and along with the singing, I remember eating bologna sandwiches and chips during the drives. Bologna still makes me think of car trips!
When I was in grade school, and my younger sisters were quite small, I remember accompanying Dad on some of the service calls he made. My sister Sue was old enough to help with the little ones, and I suspect I was a bit in the way :-). I remember making so many trips from Ann Arbor to Jackson when he had his left knee removed and the joint fused. That helped me decide to go to Nursing school. I remember going to my Grandpa and Grandma Johnson's house many a Sunday, and playing cards. It was always a treat to be either Dad's or Grandpa's partner, as you were never sure exactly what would happen! I remember going to ball games- Dad was a catcher, and so was my husband Dan. They talked baseball a lot.
We went down to my folks when Dan wanted to ask for permission to marry me. He and Dad went for a walk, and I was very nervous waiting at home with Mom. I could imagine all kinds of questions, but Dan told me later they mostly talked baseball. Dad designed the headpiece for me for my wedding, and Mom made my gown.
I loved him so, and will miss him very, very much.
